Background:
Largely recorded at my mom’s house in Oxford, MI at the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014, before I moved to Austin, in a room that contained all the remaining musical odds and ends from me and my brother’s rocknroll adolescence. Only tracks 2, 5, 6 and 7 were actually written for the record, the rest are old. I wrote “Charts” when I was 20 and creepily in love but didn’t like it until now. Also strange is I wrote that bit about the Rhine River not even being sure where it was located but now have lived by it in two different countries. “Leg Work” (circa 2009) was just waiting for more words, the right arrangement and that drum beat, which I thought would be more like Sam Cooke’s “Chain Gang.” Tracks 1, 4, 8, 10 were recorded long ago and just needed the right record to go on. In fact, Brett, Austin and I used to play “Enough…” when we were on tour in the midwest back in 2009.
Credits:
Scott played drums on 10 (that’s his yelp at the end.) We recorded his part in his dad’s living room some summer during college. We didn’t have headphones good enough for him to hear over his drums, so I had to wear them and stand in his line of sight but two rooms over, conducting, so that he could match the tempo of the rest of the recordings.
Mixing help and emotional support from Lee Marcinak and
Garrett Anderson.
